I designed a logo, business cards and flyers for the Kailua Movement Studio. It’s been very satisfying to see my work around town, and when I come in for dance classes! The concept was building off of the lotus they were using in their current logo. I simplified the text, and added a dancing figure to the lotus to emphasize the “movement” aspect of the studio. I also muted their current bright pink color scheme to a more rosy pink and added blues and greens to bring in a sense of the outdoors.I also came up with the tagline, “Come in & let go.” It’s a combination of a sense of welcoming and also of release from every day worries and frustrations. It was different to do a design project for a client where I’m already a customer. In a way, it was difficult to keep a distanced perspective on it, and try to view the business as someone new coming in. On the other hand, it gave me a lot of passion and energy because I love dancing there! It’s a beautiful little studio with a great view of the Ko’olau mountain range, and so convenient in the middle of Kailua too.

After many discussions (which were about politics, computers, families, and sustainability as much as design), I have the final logo for my client, Cathy. Her business provides freshly made lunches delivered directly to schools. These lunches feature local, preservative-free & organic ingredients in biodegradable packaging.
The concept behind the logo was to give her something playful and friendly to match both her personality and her lunches (the sandwiches will be cut into kid-friendly shapes like stars, for example). The carrot character is one of many little “friends” that I’ve designed which will be used for her other marketing material – stationary, business cards, a brochure – and I will post them here once they are finished!
The lettering is my spin on the font Halcyon by l’Abécédarienne (more of her fonts available at http://www.abecedarienne.com

Since I don’t have any current project finished to write about, I’m going to review an old favorite.
Back in March, my Auntie told me about the Hawaii Cat Foundation, a non-profit no-kill shelter for stray and feral cats on Oahu. They also work to educate the community about spray and neuter services, and provide clinics semi-annually. As an animal lover, I decided to donate my design services to provide the organization with a logo and brochure.
I started by visiting the shelter in Kaneohe. I took about 200 photos of the cats, which are housed in large comfortable cages.
When I got home, I traced the face of a cat in one of the photos to use for the logo. Note that there is a distinct vee-shape cut out of the right ear – that’s a common method used to mark cats that have been spayed or neutered. I felt it added to the design because for those who know what it means, it conveys an extra layer of information about the organization. And for the majority who don’t know, it makes the cat look less like a house pet, and more like one on the streets. The font is fertigo – available for free. I chose it because it is a sans-serif with personality.
Then came the brochure, which is nothing to brag about design-wise, but it gives all the information about the organization and how to contact them in one concise format. So they were very excited to have it available to hand out at the Pet Expo back in May.
Someday, I’m going to get back together with the Foundation to help them print the logo on shirts that they can sell to help get extra funds.
